In July of 2004 Reactor Technologies Ltd. (RTL) embarked on a research and development project the purpose of which was to build a self energising Fast Thermal Reactor (FTR) that would produce clean energy and activated carbon from a renewable energy source i.e. wood chips.

Development of the FTR was moved to Scotland and in a period of fourteen months RTL constructed a dedicated FTR research facility; capable of processing ten tonne’s of wood chip per day. The project reached a successful conclusion in December 2009 with the production of activated carbon and a thermal energy export of 4000 kWh for every tonne of wood chip processed suitable for electricity generation.

The FTR utilises the effects of fast pyrolysis to process biomass. The major benefits are its rapid production rate of activated carbon, i.e. 30 minutes as opposed to 2 - 24 hours for a rotary kiln, its low volume footprint, some 25% of that required by a rotary kiln, zero fuel running costs, minimal moving parts, feed and extraction only, reduced comparative build/installation cost by almost 50%.
